The story behind Piper-Heidsieck champagne

The famous champagne house was founded in 1785 where Florens-Louis Heidsieck with great passion for quality produced his first champagne. He presented his cuvée to the French queen, Marie-Antoinette, who loved it from the first sip sparkling wine . The queen was the perfect ambassador for Heidsieck's champagne, and soon the wine became known everywhere. No less than 14 kingdoms and principalities brought the wine to the court.

Florens-Louis Heidsieck died in 1828 but his nephew Christian continued to run the company, now in partnership with the well-known wine maker Henri-Guillaume Piper. Unfortunately, the successful partnership came to an abrupt end in 1835 when Christian Heidsieck died unexpectedly.

But fortunately this was not the end of the well-known champagne brand, and in 1838 Henri-Guillaume Piper married Christian Heidsieck's widow, and thus the house got its name Piper-Heidsieck Champagne .

In 1885, they celebrated the 100th anniversary of the launch of the wine for the French queen by developing a special prestige cuvée, Rare Champagne . A bottle designed by the Russian Czar's court jeweller, Fabergé, marked the royal inspiration for the distinguished new cuvée.  The Prestige cuvée , Rare, is today an independent luxury champagne brand.

In 1933, Piper-Heidsieck Champagne was used in the film "Sons of the Desert" (Laurel and Hardy) and after that the popular champagne appeared in many new films. Since then, Piper-Heidsieck has been closely linked to the film world. The legendary bottle has been used in films with, among others, Clark Gable, Fred Astaire and, not least, Marilyn Monroe. The latter further boosted the popularity by saying "I start every day with a glass of Piper-Heidsieck, - because it warms my body up".

Today, Piper-Heidsieck is the official champagne at, among others, the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards, where the Oscar statuettes are handed out.

The romantic has always been linked to Piper-Heidsieck and the little red dash in the name has inspired the well-known tagline for Piper-Heidsieck, - " A DASH OF SEDUCTION ".

Piper-Heidsieck is the most awarded champagne house since the turn of the millennium, and the famous cellar master Régis Camus has won the award, Champagne/Sparkling Winemaker of the Year a total of 8 times.

Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Brut is the cornerstone of the portfolio, which also includes Cuvée Sublime demi-sec, Rosé Sauvage brut, Essientiel Cuvée Reserve extra brut, Essientiel Blanc de Blancs extra brut and Piper-Heidsieck Vintage brut.
